Course Description
The AP® African American Studies course enables students to explore the experiences of African American communities in the United States and connect them to Africa and its broader history. It encompasses African American history, culture, arts, and politics from ancient Africa to modern times, with a focus on themes such as identity, migration, and resistance. Students will engage with critical topics, including important historical events, cultural movements, social issues, and ideas, using original documents, various readings, and projects that draw on multiple fields.

The course is based on the four units of required content in the AP® African American Studies Course and Exam Description outlined by College Board. In this course, students will examine, interpret, and analyze the topics from the following four units of study: Origins of the African Diaspora; Freedom, Enslavement, and Resistance; The Practice of Freedom; and Movements and Debates. The course also provides four themes that students explore throughout the course to make connections among historical developments in different times and places: Migration and the African Diaspora; Intersections of Identity; Creativity, Expression, and the Arts; and Resistance and Resilience.

This course requires an Individual Student Project which is introduced in Semester 1 and will be integrated throughout the course. Students will be responsible for understanding the requirements and deadlines of the Project. ALL Project work must be completed and presented to teachers before April 30th for score submissions to the College Board for the AP® Exam in early May.

This course does not include registration for the AP Exam Offering. Students planning to take the AP exam are required to register and sit locally for the AP Exam.
