Course Description The AP® Spanish Literature and Culture course is designed to deepen students' understanding and appreciation of Hispanic literary texts, spanning from medieval to contemporary works. Through close reading, critical analysis, and cultural exploration, students will engage with required texts while making connections to historical, social, and artistic movements that have shaped the Spanish-speaking world. This course emphasizes literary analysis, thematic connections, and cultural interpretation, encouraging students to examine texts through a variety of lenses, including gender roles, identity, exile, power dynamics, and artistic expression. Assignments will include comparative essays, creative writing, multimedia presentations, and research projects that foster analytical thinking, effective argumentation, and appreciation for artistic expression across different mediums. Students will also explore connections between literature and visual arts, film, and music, further enriching their understanding of how cultural products reflect and challenge societal values. The course will use Spanish almost exclusively, encouraging students to actively participate in the target language as much as possible. This course is designed to prepare students to communicate efficiently in Spanish using the three modes of communication—interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational—as defined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. Students will refine their Spanish language skills, focusing on sophisticated writing, critical discussion, and oral presentations. They will engage with a diverse range of texts while drawing connections to global issues. By the end of the course, students will have developed the skills necessary to interpret literature with depth, express complex ideas in Spanish, and make insightful cultural and historical connections. The course is based on the eight units of required content in the AP® Spanish Literature and Culture Course and Exam Description outlined by College Board. These are La época medieval, El siglo XVI, El siglo XVII, La literature romántica, realista y naturalista, La Generación del 98 y el Modernismo, Teatro y poesía del siglo XX, El Boom latinoamericano, and Escritores contemporáneos de Estados Unidos y España.
