Course Description
This course builds on the foundational communication skills and cultural knowledge developed in American Sign Language I (MS). Students expand their receptive and expressive ASL skills as they communicate about increasingly varied topics, including celebrations, emotions, physical characteristics, clothing, animals, professions, places, transportation, travel, and the home.

Throughout the course, students develop more complex ASL communication skills by describing people and objects, expressing emotions, discussing experiences, asking for and giving directions, and using numbers beyond 100. Students continue to develop their understanding of ASL grammar through the use of non-manual signals, facial expressions, eye gaze, body shifting, classifiers, pluralization, directional verbs, and the use of movement, location, and orientation to communicate meaning.

Students also deepen their understanding of Deaf culture and the Deaf community by exploring cultural perspectives, historical events such as the Deaf President Now movement, DeafBlind experiences, name signs, and influential figures in Deaf culture. By the end of the course, students will be able to participate in a wider range of simple ASL interactions and will have strengthened the linguistic and cultural foundation needed for continued study of American Sign Language.
