Course Description
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture. Students develop beginning receptive and expressive signing skills while learning essential vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers, and basic ASL grammar.

Throughout the course, students learn to communicate about familiar, age-appropriate topics such as family, school, time, activities and sports, the human body, and food. Students practice asking and answering questions, expressing possession, describing people and objects, discussing past and future events, and participating in simple everyday interactions. They also explore important features of ASL, including handshape, movement, location, palm orientation, non-manual signals, facial expressions, sign order, and the use of space.

In addition to developing language skills, students are introduced to Deaf culture and the Deaf community through discussions of topics such as Deaf identity, residential schools, iconic signs, and notable individuals in Deaf history and culture. By the end of the course, students will have a foundation in ASL that enables them to understand and produce simple signed communication and prepares them for continued study of American Sign Language.
