Course Description
Art History is a survey of art through time with a focus on cultural exploration. The course introduces visual art principles and helps students view artwork within the context of which it was made. Exploration of the cultures and periods that created significant works of art are an essential factor in understanding the relevance of Art History. In this course, key artworks will be identified and discussed. The course includes historical content beginning with the Stone Age, Ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Then, students explore the art of China, Japan, and Korea shifting focus to Indigenous, Early American, and Contemporary Art. The course concludes by looking at 20th century African and Oceanic art and contemplates how innovative and diverse techniques have influenced art around the globe.
