Course Description This course is specifically designed for students from the state of Tennessee. The focus of this course is the study of Euclidian geometry. Studying plane figures both on and off the coordinate grid, students develop an understanding of the structures of geometry. They use postulates, corollaries, and theorems to write proofs for properties of two-dimensional figures, including triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles. Students use transformations to understand congruence in terms of rigid motions, and similarity in terms of similarity transformations. Students look at the relationships in right triangles to develop an understanding of trigonometry, and learn the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines for all triangles. Students also build on prior knowledge from Algebra 1, expanding their knowledge of parabolas to include the focus and directrix. Once they have learned about two-dimensional figures, they use that foundation to learn the properties of three-dimensional figures such as prisms, cones, pyramids, and spheres. The following are the key concepts that students will be studying in this course: Foundations of Geometry, Angle and Triangle Relationships, Congruence and Similarity, Trigonometric Relationships, Circles and Parabolas, Geometric Figures and Measurements, and Probability. Prerequisites Algebra I Course Materials A graphing calculator is required, such as a TI-83.
