Course Description This course is specifically designed for students from the state of Tennessee. Proficiency with key concepts and skills of Algebra I is often cited as a requisite for college- and career-readiness. These foundational concepts of algebraic thinking provide the gateway to advanced mathematics. At the heart of this course is the study of functions. Through the study of specific functions: notably linear, exponential, quadratic functions, students will be able to see the structure of functions, to make generalization about all functions, and to describe the uniqueness of specific functions. Within the study of functions, students will work with various types of real numbers, from rational and radicals, to irrational. Students will apply properties of numbers and equality to carry out operations within different functions, all with the goal of seeing the applicability of mathematics to describe and model a wide range of natural or man-made events. The focus on transforming functions will help students build connections between the algebraic and graphical representations of functions. The following are the key concepts that students will be studying in this course: Number and Quantities, Solving Equations and Inequalities, A Study of Functions, Linear Functions and Equations, Quadratic Functions and Equations, Exponential Functions and Equations, and Statistics.
