Course Description This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of fundamental concepts and their applications while reinforcing and developing skills essential for continued success as lifelong learners. Students will be introduced to the Japanese language and culture through interactive lessons that begin with the three writing systems: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Each unit will give students ample opportunities for ownership of their learning via forum discussions and provide guided practice for writing, speaking, and listening in Japanese. Thematic topics explored include: greetings and introductions, family relationships, school/classes, telling time, daily routines, places around town, weather, sports/leisure activities, and shopping/foods. Grammar topics explored include: SOV sentence structure, particles, adjectives, comparisons/superlatives, expressing reasons, counters, adverbs, masu form, dictionary form, te-form, invitational form, and volitional form. These vocabulary and grammar topics combined with cultural exploration make this course an engaging, comprehensive beginner level Japanese course. Self Paced Scheduling Information Complete Courses - Full Credit Equivalent courses must be completed by your school's end date and within 9 months - 1/2 Credit Equivalent courses must be completed by your school's end date and within 4 months - 1/4 Credit Equivalent courses must be completed by your school's end date and within 2 months Abbreviated Courses - Abbreviated Full Credit Equivalent courses must be completed by your school's end date and within 60 days. - Abbreviated 1/2 and 1/4 Credit Equivalent courses must be completed by your school's end date and within 30 days. Course Materials Recommended English-Japanese Japanese-English Dictionary. A microphone is required and a headset is recommended.
