Course Description This course is specifically designed for students from the state of North Carolina. This is an honors level course that challenges students with capstone analysis, evaluation, and creativity. Students are required to complete honors capstone assignments in each semester of the course, involving research, creation, and/or the extensive use of multimedia. This course guides students through a series of lessons that focus on the American system of government. An emphasis is placed on the origin of government, the English Bill of Rights, the founding of the original thirteen colonies, the Proclamation of 1763, the First Continental Congress, the Articles of Confederation, the origin and principles of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, executive, legislative, and judicial powers, the U.S. Senate, impeachment, how a bill becomes a law, the U.S. House of Representatives, the President, the Presidential Cabinet, and elections. The course will highlight examples within American history where the government of the United States and North Carolina have evolved into the modern system that exists today. Lastly, students will engage with state level concepts specific to North Carolina in the studies to further enhance their civic literacy.
