Course Description This course is specifically designed for students from the state of Arizona. English II is designed so students can experience literature actively and to learn how to enjoy reading literature. The assigned material falls into six main categories: short story, novel, poetry, essay, nonfiction, and drama. Students may also be inspired to emulate at least some of the writing and writers represented. Students will respond to each novel by writing expository or persuasive essays. All essays are graded using the holistic scoring rubric. Works include The Monkey's Paw, The Time Machine, The Origin of Species, Much Ado About Nothing, The Red Room, and poetry. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to read more effectively - for both knowledge and enjoyment, use their new vocabulary to discuss, write about and understand literature, and explain the characteristics of the different genres. This course is aligned to the Arizona State Standards.
