Course Description
This course is specifically designed for students from the state of Virginia.

In this course, students will read various literary classics, poetry, and historical texts. Students will analyze how a narrative structure impacts a story and identify how an author uses literary technique to create mood, tone, and atmosphere. Students will identify different ways in which language use varies according to different contexts, recognize a speaker's/writer's intentions in writing or speaking in a certain way, and explain the effects of specific features of language use in different contexts. Students will use writing strategies and techniques to respond to each text with several expository essays. Students will determine the literal and figurative meanings of words in a nonfiction text. They will analyze how an author uses and refines the meaning of a key term or terms over the course of a text. They will evaluate multiple sources of information presented in different formats and analyze historical texts from different time periods. Finally, students will also create presentations and writing a research paper as well as reviewing sentence structure and different genres of writing. Readings include Hound of the Baskervilles, Pride and Prejudice, Macbeth, and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

- 1/2 Credit Equivalent courses must be completed by your school's end date and within 4 months
- 1/4 Credit Equivalent courses must be completed by your school's end date and within 2 months

ABBREVIATED COURSES - A shortened course intended for students seeking to recover credits or make-up failed courses during the regular school year or over the summer.
- Abbreviated Full Credit Equivalent courses must be completed by your school's end date and within 60 days.
- Abbreviated 1/2 and 1/4 Credit Equivalent courses must be completed by your school's end date and within 30 days.

PARTIAL COURSES - A partial version of an online course intended for students temporarily away from classes (i.e. Home Bound Instruction, In/Out-of School Suspension).
