Course Description
This course is specifically designed for students from the state of New York.

In this course, students will practice critical reading and close analysis across a number of works. Students build skills to evaluate literary elements and find evidence to determine theme, mood, suspense, and tone. With one short story at the beginning of the full year course and another story at the end, students can reflect on and examine their learning throughout the course. Additionally, through a comparative essay, students contrast the overall impact of these stories. The skills students build through examining these shorter works are translated over larger works. With analyzing novels, students meet objectives surrounding summarizing and paraphrasing; however, they are also asked to apply similar critical and close readings with the challenge of examining a sustained longer work. Throughout the course, students balance practicing research, writing strategies across genres, building an argument, speaking and listening, and building and applying vocabulary. Readings include: The Monkey's Paw, The Time Machine, The Origin of Species, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Red Room.

This course is correlated to NY state standards, including topics covered in the NY state Regents exam.
