Course Description
The 2nd Grade Science course is an interactive and interdisciplinary experience. Students will learn about the building blocks of matter, matter itself, how matter can change, and methods to separate matter. The matter unit has a culminating scavenger-hunt lab. Next students learn about life cycles of plants and animals and the necessary "ingredients" to grow plants. The Sun as the major source of energy is emphasized throughout the course. The life science section ends by exploring evolution and adaptation. The student will then summarize one life cycle and with the guidance of the Writing Workshop will develop a short essay. Next, the topic of energy, what is energy and energy transformations are covered. This leads into the Water Cycle with emphasis on the Sun as a driving force. The student then learns about Earth's water, the various phases in which it exists, and different bodies of Earth's water. The changing Earth is dealt in three lessons. The first covers how slowly earth changes such as with the rock cycle. This followed by how quickly Earth's surface can change such as with an earth quake. The last part of the Earth science section explores how "man" attempts to control wind and water to suit his own needs as well as the effect of wind and water on landforms. Once again the Writing Workshop is used to continue to develop writing skills. The last part of the course deals with Earth/Space science. The relationship between Earth, Sun, and the Moon is studied. Earth's rotation and orbitals are explained and related to a day, season, and year. In addition the phases of the Moon are investigated. The last assignment gives the student a choice to either complete a lab about the phases of the moon or erosion.
