Course Description
This course is specifically designed for students from the state of North Carolina.

This is an honors level course that challenges students with capstone analysis, evaluation, and creativity. Students are required to complete honors capstone assignments in each semester of the course, involving research, creation, and/or the extensive use of multimedia.

In this comprehensive literary analysis course, students will practice critical reading and close analysis across a number of works. Two short stories ("The Red Room" and "Monkey's Paw") build skills to evaluate literary elements and find evidence to determine theme, mood, suspense, and tone. With one short story at the beginning of the full year course and another story at the end, students can reflect on and examine their learning throughout the year.

Additionally, through a comparative essay, students contrast the overall impact of these stories. The skills students build through examining these shorter works are translated over larger works (Much Ado about Nothing and The Time Machine). With analyzing novels, students meet objectives surrounding summarizing and paraphrasing; however, they are also asked to apply similar critical and close readings, with the challenge of examining a sustained longer work. Throughout the course, students balance practicing research, writing strategies across genres, building an argument, speaking & listening, and building & applying vocab.
